Record for the last 30 years: 183 regional conflicts were active on the planet in 2023

Throughout 2024, Belarusians will observe the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Belarus from the Nazi invaders.   And in May 2025 we will celebrate the anniversary of the victory of the Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War. Some people are surprised and do not understand why we still piously honor these events. But the sacred memory of war, genocide, great exploits and the strength of the human spirit is already sewn into our DNA.

The last two years in the world have become the most conflictual since the end of the Cold War. In 2023, there were 183 regional conflicts on the planet. This is a record for 30 years, analysts of the International Institute for Strategic Studies have calculated. The disappointing facts from the authors of the review sound like this:

"The defining feature of today's global conflict landscape has become their intractability..... [There is] a grim picture of growing violence in many regions, wars that chronically impede peace."

Other numbers are frightening as well. Violence in military conflicts rose by 28% in one year alone, and the number of deaths by 14%. Analysts pay special attention to the fact that war is once again perceived by some leaders of states as a useful instrument of politics.
