Belarus today remembers the tragedy at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. The technogenic disaster occurred 38 years ago. The radioactive cloud affected more than 20 countries, but the most affected was Belarus - almost a quarter of the total territory. The consequences of the accident were liquidated by more than half a million people. Vasily Ignatenko, a 25-year-old native of Gomel Region, was among the first to arrive at the site of the tragedy. The commander of a branch of the Pripyat paramilitary fire department received a lethal dose of radiation.

Rescuers were among the first to honor the memory of the liquidators of the accident today. Representatives of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, rescuers-liquidators, cadets of the University of Civil Protection, as well as a delegation of the Ministry of Emergency Situations from Russia took part in the events at the memorial plaque to Vasily Ignatenko.

Commemorative events are taking place across the country today. Rescuers also meet with veterans - liquidators of the consequences of the man-made disaster.
