State Commission for choosing site for radioactive waste disposal set up in Belarus

The Council of Ministers decided to create a state commission to select a priority site for the construction of a radioactive waste disposal facility. This is stipulated by the government decree № 158 of March 7, 2024, which is officially published on the National Legal Internet Portal, BelTA reports.

According to the document, the state commission will be headed by Deputy Prime Minister of Belarus Piotr Parkhomchik. It will also include representatives of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, Ministry of Energy, National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, Ministry of Natural Resources, Ministry of Architecture, Ministry of Defense, Ministry of Health.

The State Commission is instructed to submit these proposals to the Council of Ministers within 10 working days after the completion of work on the preparation of proposals on the selection of a priority site for the construction of a radioactive waste disposal facility.

The main tasks of the State Commission are to study the materials prepared on the results of scientific and survey works on the selection of alternative sites for the disposal facility; to consider the proposals on the disposal facility location and selection of the priority site for its construction; to submit proposals to the Government for making a decision on the disposal facility location taking into account the selection of the priority site.

In order to implement the main tasks, the Commission, if necessary, can attract representatives of the state bodies.
