WSJ: Israel considering flooding tunnels in Gaza Strip with seawater

5 декабря 2023

The Israeli authorities are considering the possibility of flooding with sea water system of underground tunnels in the Gaza Strip, in which, presumably, are hiding Hamas fighters, reports the Wall Street Journal. According to the publication, the IDF in mid-November completed the installation of five pumping stations near the Ash-Shati refugee camp. They are capable of flooding the tunnels within a few weeks. The publication notes that the implementation of such plans could lead to an environmental disaster and further worsen the situation with fresh water in the enclave. Tel Aviv has not yet made a final decision. Opinions in the White House are also divided.

The humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip is already catastrophic. WHO representatives report that more than 200 attacks on medical facilities have been carried out in the Palestinian enclave in less than two months. The number of functioning hospitals has fallen from 36 to 18. Hospitals are overcrowded, understaffed and those that are available are exhausted.

The IDF, meanwhile, continues fighting in the region. Al-Jazeera TV is reporting the storming of the Palestinian town of Jenin in the West Bank. The Israel Defense Forces also launched new strikes on the town of Jebaliya in the northern Gaza Strip.

Hezbollah targets in Lebanon were also shelled. Earlier, the movement reported the defeat of 12 military positions in northern Israel.
