President of Belarus agrees to submit to House of Representatives bill on suspension of CFE Treaty

5 апреля 2024

Today, the President of Belarus has agreed to introduce the bill "On Suspension of the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe" to the House of Representatives. But this does not mean the withdrawal of our country from the document. At the same time, the Armed Forces are not going to stop the procedures related to its implementation.

The treaty was ratified by Belarus and entered into force in 1992. According to the document, the total levels of conventional weapons and equipment in five main categories - tanks, armored combat vehicles, artillery, attack helicopters and combat aircraft - should be limited.

The document also includes obligations on verification - information exchange and inspections. But in fact we see that in August 2022 the Czech Republic decided not to fulfill the CFE Treaty with regard to our country. Last March, Poland did the same. In addition, in November 2023, the NATO North Atlantic Council announced the intention of its member countries to suspend participation in the CFE Treaty.
