President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko said at the EAEU summit in St. Petersburg that the union retains a high level of self-sufficiency in raw materials and the key types of food, BelTA reports.

For example, the EAEU countries hold the second place in the world in oil and gas production, production of mineral fertilizers, the third - in wheat, potatoes, livestock products, the fourth - in coal production.

Alexander Lukashenko reminded that at the very beginning of the its functioning, the EAEU had a negative foreign trade balance for food group goods, which amounted to almost $13 billion in 2015.

"Now, thanks to coordinated work within the Union, we have eliminated the imbalance and entered a plus in food. We have achieved a high level of food self-sufficiency, which, for example, is almost 100% in Belarus. We cover our domestic needs in grain, pork, poultry meat, milk, vegetables, vegetable oils, chicken eggs and other products through our own production," the President said.

The head of state also drew attention to the fact that such results were achieved under very unfavorable external conditions.
