President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko raised the issue of fairness of punishment measures at a meeting on certain issues of improving the legislation on criminal liability, BelTA reports.

"We have been steadfast: the activities of state bodies, public institutions should be based on the principle of fairness. This applies to criminal policy as well. Fairness should permeate the entire criminal law and the practice of its application," emphasized the head of state.

But is this the case in reality, the President asked. He pointed out that the criminal situation in the country is normal and there are no emergencies. Alexander Lukashenko cited the situation in Belarus during the New Year holidays as an example. As is known, on the eve of the New Year, the head of state heard reports of the heads of the power bloc, and, as the President explained, he did it intentionally: "One signal to the society that the President heard everyone, and the ministers promised me, especially the Minister of Internal Affairs, that there would be complete order in the country - and so it turned out. Only nine offenses and not a single serious one."
