For the first time, the National Historical Museum presents an exhibition of counterfeit money. The exhibition will feature about 500 items dating back to as early as the 1st c. AD and all the way to the Polotsk shilling.

The exposition consists of items from the funds of the Historical Museum, as well as coins and banknotes from private collections. The exhibition will also have rare counterfeit money. Sometimes, the value of such fake money is estimated to be even more than that of the original.

Counterfeiting was a serious crime in the Middle Ages. The punishment for people who forged money was cutting off the hand. The crime could also carry the death penalty.
