Infant mortality decreases in Belarus

By Yulia Grizunt: According to the latest statistics, infant mortality has decreased in Belarus. Over the past few months, about two tragic cases per 1,000 births have been recorded. This is a record figure for Belarus. Belarus is one of the top 10 countries with the lowest infant mortality rate.

The decrease became possible due to the development of neonatology. For example, recently Belarusian surgeons performed a liver transplant on a 7-month-old baby who, shortly before that, underwent a serious heart operation. Also, on the basis of the National Traumatology Scientific and Practical Centre, the Union State's project for the treatment of spinal pathology is ongoing.

Every day, up to 30 scheduled operations take place at the Centre. Doctors also find time to share experience with their colleagues. They hold Skype conferences with doctors and patients from small towns.

A multi-level health care system allows solving problems on the ground. The National Centre admits the most serious cases both in Belarus and from abroad. Doctors from abroad work here too. For example, medical professionals from five countries are being trained at the Otorhinolaryngology Centre now.
