Nebenzya: Strikes on Yemen have nothing to do with the exercise of right to self-defense

The world is watching with tension the development of the situation in the Middle East. Last night, the US and UK launched a new strike on the capital of Yemen.

Reportedly, the target of the attack was a radar-guided missile system used by the Houthis to fire at ships in the Red Sea. The military operation against North Yemen, conducted by the British and Americans is being held for the second day.

UN meeting on the situation in Yemen

Due to the aggravation of the situation, Russia has requested an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council. Moscow insists that the Americans are driven only by "hegemonic" aspirations. The strikes on Yemen cannot be regarded as US defensive actions and are a direct violation of international law.

Vasily Nebenzya, Russia's permanent representative to the UN:

Contrary to the assertions of Western colleagues, the massive US and British strikes on the territory of Yemen have nothing to do with the exercise of the right to self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter. Article 51 does not apply to the situation with commercial vessels. The right to self-defense cannot be invoked to ensure freedom of navigation.

New hotspot

An unusually harsh statement was made by a Chinese spokesman. He insists that the strikes on Yemen are a blatant display of military adventurism.
