UN commemorates World War II events with moment of silence

6 мая 2017

A moment of silence was observed at the UN headquarters to commemorate the events of World War II and the 72nd anniversary of the Victory. Memorable events on the eve of this day were held by the permanent missions of 9 countries to the UN.

This year, the CIS countries organized an exhibition of photographs that captured the events of the Great Patriotic War. The opening of the exhibition was attended by Permanent Representative of Belarus to the United Nations Andrei Dapkiunas and Permanent Representative of Turkmenistan Aksoltan Ataeva, as well as the UN Secretary General - Antonio Guterres.

Antonio Guterres noted that the Second World War was not just a devastating war that brought enormous suffering and death to the countries that organized this photo exhibition, it was also a war against a monstrous ideology. Luckily, this ideology was defeated, and the main mission of the UN now is to save the coming generations from new world wars. While there are so many armed conflicts on the planet, each of us must do everything possible to stop them and avoid new wars in the future.

The symbolism of the ceremony is that it took place near the Tree of Peace and Unity, which was planted on the initiative of Belarus two years ago to commemorate the 70 anniversary of the end of the Second World War.
