The United States of America has begun training the military for combat operations in the Arctic in order to defend its dominance in this region, which indicates Washington's growing concern about the actions of Russia and China, BELTA reports citing Business Insider.

According to the publication, in February, exercises were held in Alaska to adapt the military to the extreme conditions of the Arctic. They were attended by 8 thousand U.S. military from the 11th Airborne Division and servicemen of the U.S. partners. Soldiers who took part in the exercise said an event of this level is among the Army's newest combat exercises. "A mission in the Arctic, a mission in extreme cold - it's important to our Army, it's important to our nation," Col. Sean Lucas said.

"The United States is entering a new era of intense strategic competition in the Arctic, and the more rivals active in the region, the greater the likelihood of conflict, the portal believes. Washington has continued to focus on its military presence in Alaska and its ability to project power in the region since World War II, peaking during the Cold War. After the collapse of the Soviet Union and the war in the Middle East, the U.S. military's skills deteriorated," the portal notes.

"Now the troops hope to restore the 'Arctic muscles' that have been atrophied over the past 20 years," the material says.
