Elena Kupchina nominated for OSCE Secretary General

Elena Kupchina has been nominated for the post of OSCE Secretary General, as announced by the Belarusian Foreign Ministry. The diplomat is currently serving as Belarus’ Permanent Representative to the OSCE and Ambassador of Belarus to Austria.

Elena Kupchina's nomination for the senior position has been dictated by Minsk’s intention to contribute to the strengthening of the OSCE, the Foreign Ministry points out. Elena Kupchina for a long time served as Deputy Foreign Minister of Belarus, taking a direct part in implementing initiatives aimed at strengthening security and stability in Europe, establishing dialogue between East and West and resolving acute crisis situations in the region.

The procedure for nominating candidates for the OSCE Secretary General post has just started, representatives from Kazakhstan, Finland, the Czech Republic and Switzerland acting as the Belarusian candidate’s competitors.

The term of office of current OSCE Secretary General Lamberto Zannier is to expire in June.
