War on historical memory in Moldova

1 мая 2022
The war on historical memory as a continuation of the "cancel culture". The Moldovan authorities, instead of looking for a way out of another energy crisis and trying to prevent the unfreezing of the Transnistrian conflict, want to make people forget about the Great Patriotic War, about the victorious people and the sacrifices that our ancestors made to liberate the world from the brown plague.

Moldovan President Maia Sandu signed a law banning the use of the St. George Ribbon in the territory of the country. The head of state believes that the Victory symbol "belongs to a landfill". The violation could be punished with a large fine and community service.

Bogdan Tîrdea, a Moldovan MP from the Socialist Party, said that in two days, for the first time in 30 years, four terrorist attacks occurred in Transnistria. This escalation occurs against the background of statements made by some journalists, opinion leaders and functionaries, bureaucrats from the neighboring Ukraine.

Bogdan Tîrdea, Moldovan MP from the Socialist Party:

Mr. Arestovich said that if Moldova addresses Ukraine about the need to de-occupy Transnistria, Ukraine will gladly help. We are not talking about the statements of other citizens, like Yuri Butusov, advisor to the Minister of Defense of Ukraine, who said that it is necessary to strike Transnistria in order to draw Russian troops away from Donbass and to seize the largest military stores in Europe. The hysteria and the situation in Moldova and Transnistria are very much inflamed there. The risk of involving Transnistria and Moldova in the conflict is very high. We hope only for a miracle.

Is it difficult for Moldova to refuse the Russian gas?

Moldova is 100 % dependent on the Russian gas, the deputy considers. In Moldova a serious energy and political crisis is brewing, because the price for gas has increased almost 10 times in one year, the politician says. It used to cost $125 per 1000 cubic meters, while now it's around $1,200. The price of gasoline has doubled. It is three times more expensive than in Russia and 20-30% more expensive than in Ukraine, which is in a war zone. Electricity has doubled in price. This is a real disaster for the poorest country in Europe. Many enterprises have already gone bankrupt. The people are on the verge of poverty.

President of Moldova Maya Sandu signed a law banning the use of St. George's Ribbon in the territory of the country.

In Soviet Moldova, about 400 thousand Moldovans participated in the military actions to defend the Fatherland in 1941-1945. In our country 650 thousand people were lost. 300 thousand Jews and 30 thousand Gypsies were killed during a holocaust in the concentration camps alone. Every second or third family felt all these consequences. The authorities are waging a mass campaign to intimidate citizens. They're scaring them with huge fines. And for the poorest country in the EU, where the average pension in the zone of 100 dollars, this is a serious argument for not coming to the Victory Parade.

"Nevertheless, the bloc of communists and socialists and former president Igor Dodon urged citizens to actively participate in the celebration of Victory Day. And we are convinced that the march will take place," said the parliamentarian.
