Polish judge Tomasz Schmidt asked for protection from the Belarusian authorities. He told journalists in Minsk today. About a week ago, the official left his homeland, and today he publicly showed his official ID, as well as signed a letter of resignation. Tomasz Schmidt, ex-judge of the 2nd Department of the Provincial Administrative Court of Warsaw, ex-head of the legal department at the National Council of Judges of Poland:

My departure from Poland was dictated, first of all, by the political situation, by the pressure that was put on me. After two or three months it would have been too late to leave. If we talk about our politics, it is not completely independent. The United States, UK, Germany have a very big influence. In Poland, when we communicate with each other, we have to turn off our phones - we can be bugged without a court decision. This is the kind of democracy we have. From time to time strangers come up to me and say: "Keep down, or you will end badly.
