Penalty for Red Star and jail for the St. George's Ribbon: New orders in Lithuania

14 декабря 2022

The Lithuanian parliament adopted the so-called law on de-Sovietization. Officially it is called differently, but the authors didn't hide it: the task of the document is to give legal tools which will allow to erase completely any memory of the USSR.

From May 1, 2023 the renaming of streets and squares, the destruction of memorial plaques and the dismantling of memorial sites and signs connected with the Soviet era will begin. All this has already been done, but it required additional decrees, edicts or parliamentary decisions. Now, any official can destroy any Soviet site with a single order.

Citizens will have to be careful. After all, even for the publication of a quotation of, for example, Khrushchev, faces a fine. And you can go to jail for St. George's ribbon.

Something similar is practiced by the other Baltic republics. In Estonia, the driver from Russia was fined 1200 euros. The air freshener in his car was made in the form of a model of a World War II fighter jet. And the wing of the toy, it's scary to imagine, had a red star.
