Hungary's parliament approves suspension of country's participation in CFE Treaty

The baton of countries that suspend participation in the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe, Hungary continues. The corresponding bill was approved by the parliament of the country.

Last week, Turkey announced its withdrawal from the CFE Treaty just like Poland and Moldova. Before them, most NATO countries did the same. However, the treaty is more of a formality. Because of its non-compliance by the West, Russia was forced to completely withdraw from the agreement last November.

The treaty was concluded during the Cold War and even worked for a while. But in 1999, against the backdrop of NATO expansion at the expense of Romania, Hungary and Poland, the CFE Treaty was reorganized. Only 4 countries ratified the new document, so it never entered into force. This finally untied the hands of the alliance members. By 2007, they already had much more military power than they had agreed on.
