New National Security Concept discussed in Belarus

20 февраля 2023

The draft updated national security concept was presented at the meeting of the Security Council, headed by President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko, BelTA informs.

The President stressed that the document, adopted in 2010, is still relevant. Moreover, the national security system, built in accordance with its provisions, demonstrated its effectiveness, including in the harshest period of external pressure on Belarus.

"The mechanism of so-called political terrorism, tested on many countries, did not work here in due time. Today we quite adequately respond to the next challenges thrown to us - provocations, sanctions, political ultimatums and so on. But all tests are first and foremost experience. And experience is invaluable material for devising a strategy for further development. "Adapting the national security concept for today's realities is a logical and very timely step," said the Belarusian leader.

Alexander Lukashenko stated that the elements of the Cold War are back on the international agenda today - the arms race and nuclear blackmail by the leaders of some Western countries.

"The threats of aggressive nationalism and extremism in various forms of their manifestation are evident. The ideology of neo-fascism is raising its head. The risks of drug distribution, human trafficking and illegal migration, which are also used to achieve political goals, are not decreasing. The trend towards global cultural unification, including for non-traditional phenomena, jeopardizes the basis of the national state - our moral principles, ancestral values, and historical memory", said the President.

This is happening against the background of ecosystem depletion, resource scarcity, global climate change, increasing pressure on the environment, a demographic crisis, and the danger of a new wave of all kinds of pandemics.

"All these threats did not emerge yesterday. The geopolitical interest of the Western hegemon in Belarus is not the story of one century. But the technology and methods of hybrid warfare are constantly improving. And we should look even further ahead and be proactive," said the Belarusian leader.

He reminded that he had instructed to modernize the concept of national security at the VI All-Belarusian People's Assembly.
