Belarus stands for ongoing dialogue with European Union

Belarus stands for an ongoing dialogue on human rights with the European Union, as stated by President Alexander Lukashenko at a meeting with EU Special Representative Stavros Lambrinidis. According to the President, such a delicate matter as human rights is difficult to be sorted out at individual one-time events. For that purpose, a permanent dialogue is necessary. Alexander Lukashenko reminded that Belarus and the EU had sometimes used to forget about such a dialogue and expressed satisfaction with the fact that the parties have moved away from a head-on confrontation. It is now possible to establish regular trade, economic and investment cooperation. Alexander Lukashenko is convinced that with the development of economic cooperation, many issues of a humanitarian nature, including human rights, will be taken off the table.

In turn, Stavros Lambrinidis assured Alexander Lukashenko that the EU, just like Belarus, does not consider human rights in isolation from economic issues. According to the Special Representative, the European Union expects to significantly increase cooperation with Belarus in all areas.

Today, Stavros Lambrinidis is scheduled to take part in an international conference organised by the UN mission jointly with the Belarusian Foreign Ministry and European states.
