Today, President Alexander Lukashenko visited the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, where in April 1986 a man-made disaster occurred. The President stated that Belarus and Ukraine need to strengthen their cooperation on the Chernobyl issue.

In Chernobyl, Alexander Lukashenko was met by Petro Poroshenko himself. Together, the two presidents honoured the memory of the late Chernobyl liquidators. They laid flower baskets to the Memory Wall of the memorial complex Heroes of Chernobyl. The presidents also visited the interim storage facility and got acquainted with the construction of a new safe sarcophagus over the fourth power unit of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. This facility is a multifunctional complex for the transformation of a destroyed station into an environmentally friendly system. Alexander Lukashenko and Petro Poroshenko paid special attention to maintaining radiation safety at the proper level, since this affects the interests of both countries.

Also today, Petro Poroshenko paid a return visit to Belarus. The presidents visited St. Michael's Church in Liaskovichi, where candles were lit in memory of the victims of the Chernobyl disaster. After the ceremony, the heads of states talked with the residents of the agro-town.

The two presidents also discussed one-on-one concrete projects on bilateral partnership. In particular, Belarus and Ukraine are stepping up their efforts to create new joint ventures in various branches of the economy. Priority should be given to cooperation in industry, in the petrochemical complex, as well as in agriculture, transport, and logistics.

In turn, Petro Poroshenko invited Alexander Lukashenko to pay an official visit to Ukraine this summer. More details will be given in today’s "Panorama".
