18 сентября 2016

The Central Election Commission has summed up the parliamentary elections this week, Lidia Yermoshina announcing election campaign results in figures. Being one of the most open campaigns in Belarus’ history, it was highly appreciated by international observers from Europe, the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation and the CIS.

For the first time each of the 110 deputies has been elected on an uncontested basis. The Parliament has been joined by political parties and movements that previously have not been represented there.

The new Parliament line-up will is the youngest, the average deputy age slightly exceeding 49 years. All of the deputies have higher education degrees. Voter turnout made almost 75%, 5,215,359 people participating in the elections, about 4,000 of which not casting their votes. 491,956 Belarusians, which is almost 10%, voted against all the candidates. More than 65,500 ballots were spoiled.

Starting from 15 September, the CEC received 479 appeals, which is 200 less than during the 2012 parliamentary election campaign. Many of them were not connected with the elections, but were rather related to electoral legislation clarification.
