Foreign Ministry: From the legal point of view, we see no reason why we should listen to the statements of the U.S. State Department about single day of voting in Belarus

26 февраля 2024

Our Western opponents cannot remain indifferent to the democratic elections in Belarus. The U.S. State Department, represented by the head of the press service, Matthew Miller, called the elections in our country "fictitious" and "undemocratic. First, no one asked him about it, and secondly, there was no citizen Miller in any voter lists, pointed out the Belarusian Foreign Ministry. So, it's impossible to determine which of the district commissions should respond to the complaint of the American official. Their overseas colleagues didn't have to wait long for a balanced, clear and competent response.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Anatoly Glaz: "We spent the whole night together with the Central Election Commission of Belarus looking for citizen Miller in the voter lists to determine which of the district commissions should respond to his complaint. We didn't find him. "

Then we held in-depth consultations with lawyers to understand what relation the U.S. State Department has to the elections in our country. We also found no connection. After that, we tried to find in the international law a definition of the role of the U.S. as an evaluator of the electoral process in independent states. Here, we did not find such a right either.

In this connection, from a legal point of view, we see no reason why we should take into account the statements of the United States Department of State concerning a single day of voting in the Republic of Belarus.

At the same time, we strongly recommend that the current American administration introduce mandatory testing for its employees on their knowledge of the basics of international relations and international law, of which the UN Charter is a part. There is a lot of important information there, including sovereignty, independence and non-interference in the internal affairs of other states.

To remove unnecessary anxiety over the ocean, we note that on February 25, 2024, the single day of voting in the Republic of Belarus was held, as it should be in a sovereign state, under the protection and in full compliance with Belarusian law.

And we have no objection if the elections in the United States, no matter how strange they may seem to most countries of the world, will be held in full compliance with American laws.

As for diplomacy and the direct competence of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry and the U.S. State Department, we once again confirm our openness to an equal and mutually respectful dialog with the U.S.
