By Olga Kholodovich: The Gomel State Medical University is working on a unique technology for the non-surgical treatment of liver cirrhosis using stem cells. The alternative method lies in stem cell transplantation. The material can be obtained from the adipose tissue or bone marrow of the donor or patient.

Liver cirrhosis is diagnosed in approximately 1,500 Belarusians annually. In 35 out of 1,000 cases patients are not able to wait for liver transplantation surgery. Such operations are currently performed according to the waiting list in Minsk only.

So far, the alternative method is being tested on laboratory animals, clinical trials planned to launch in the coming years.
