Mogilev commemorates Chernobyl tragedy anniversary

26 апреля 2017

A requiem meeting was held today in Mogilev to commemorate the anniversary of the biggest man-made disaster of the 20th century. The meeting was held at the monument to the victims of the Chernobyl tragedy. The official data suggest, as a result of the Chernobyl disaster, almost a third of the territory of Mogilev Region was contaminated with radionuclides. Slavgorod, Krasnopolsky, and Kostyukovichy Districts, as well as some other districts, still remain affected – a total of 14 districts. The participants observed a minute of silence in memory of the first liquidators and responders to the disaster – the armed forces, the Ministry for Emergency Situations, the police, and doctors.

Following the state programme to support the areas affected by the Chernobyl accident, more than 22 million BYN will be allocated this year to revive the areas. The money will be invested in health care, municipal improvement, housing construction, and the creation of new industries.
