Soviet period art still popular today

By Inna Pilevich: 7 November - a significant episode in our history - has found its way in art. Anatoly Shibnev's painting which depicts the real events of 1917 - the First All-Russian Congress of Soviets - is considered a classic. The monumental work was often exhibited during the Soviet era and is currently kept in the National Art Museum of Belarus. It has been put on display to mark the October Revolution Day.

The emergence of the Soviet era gave rise to the demand in images of political figures. Busts of Marx, Engels and Lenin were produced in million copies. One of the most popular sculptors was Belarusian Zair Azgur.

Soviet period art is hunted by private gallery owners, with large sums of money offered for both busts of political figures and historically themed paintings. The most generous buyers are from Russia. They are looking for masterpieces created in the country that no longer exists on the world's political map.
