By Ksenia Rabchinskaya: The construction of its own nuclear power plant is one of the most ambitious projects in Belarus’ modern history. In due time, the initiative was put forward by the President. The country’s own NPP is not just cheap energy, but also an additional guarantee of state independence. Besides, nuclear energy can become a new industry in economy and science, as it once happened with space technologies. The country’s authorities have repeatedly stated that the Belarusian NPP will be the safest in the world.
The global and ambitious project was discussed in detail this week by Alexander Lukashenko and the Rosatom Director General at the Palace of Independence. Prior to the meeting, Alexei Likhachev visited the NPP construction site in Ostrovets. According to the President, the country is paying close attention to the project, fulfilling its obligations and providing reports to international organizations, including the IAEA.
