25 июля 2014
Today the first stone in the foundation of the Vitebsk hydroelectric plant on the river Western Dvina was laid. It will become the most powerful run-of-river power plant in the country. Serious preparatory work was carried out before the construction started: the river was dammed, access roads were built, and temporary power supply was organized. Hydroelectric power plant should start its work in 2017. The contract for the construction was signed with a Chinese corporation. The project costs almost $190 million, with a third of this amount aimed at Belarusian enterprises and materials.
By 2020 a cascade of four hydropower plants will appear on the river Western Dvina: Polotsk, Vitebsk, Beshenkovichi and
Verhnedvinsk plants.
