The allies of the U.S. in Europe are increasingly concerned that a united front of the West to support Ukraine may quickly disintegrate if the Republicans win the midterm elections in early November. This is reported by Washington Post, as BelTA reports.
The publication notes that allies of Ukraine have pledged a total of more than $93 billion in military, financial and humanitarian aid to the country, with the lion's share going to the United States.
After the statement of the Republican Party representative in the US House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy, that the lower chamber of the US Congress would not continue to give Ukraine a "blank check," officials both in Ukraine and in Western Europe began to wonder whether Kiev would be able to continue relying on the US.
It remains to be seen whether Republicans will make good on their threat to cut funding to Ukraine if they take control of the House of Representatives in the upcoming elections.
That said, the mere suggestion that the U.S. might pull back has alarmed Western capitals.
The midterm elections for the U.S. House of Representatives will be held on November 8. Once they are held, all 435 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives and more than 30 of the 100 seats in the U.S. Senate will be filled. According to forecasts, Republicans could increase their representation in both houses of the legislature, which would give them an opportunity to obstruct the implementation of the Democratic resident's proposals.
