Russia and Ukraine will hold a second round of talks near Brest on March 3. The head of the Russian delegation, Assistant to the Russian President Vladimir Medinsky told this to journalists today.
The Russian side has arrived at the talks on March 2. This was confirmed yesterday by Russia and Ukraine. However, apparently, when it became clear that the Ukrainian delegation would not make it to the negotiating venue in time, Vladimir Medinsky decided to make a statement.
The politician noted that the Russian side arrived in the same composition. He recalled that during the first round of talks in the Gomel Region on February 28, the parties voiced their positions and proposals for an immediate ceasefire. "We've generally found an understanding for a number of proposals at the negotiating table. However, the Ukrainian side took time for reflection and consultations with Kiev regarding some of the most principal ones, which was quite expected," the Russian presidential aide said.
He also explained that the Ukrainian delegation has already left Kiev and is now on its way. According to Vladimir Medinsky, the Russian side understands the "difficulties of logistics" of the Ukrainian delegation. The Russian military provided a security corridor for it to move through Ukraine. Belarus is responsible for the security of the parties in its territory.
"We arrived early. They will probably be here tomorrow morning," the politician said and thanked the Belarusian side for their hospitality and very professional and efficient organization of the negotiations.
Vladimir Medinsky said about the choice of the negotiating venue, that it was a common decision: "We all decided together. It is more convenient for us and the Ukrainian side. Brest is a good airport, the Ukrainian side is closer to the Polish border, because, as far as I understand, they go through Poland.”
