The struggle with history continues in the Baltic States. First they put up a fence, then they trampled the flowers by the tractor, and now they want to demolish the memorial itself. The commission of the Latvian Parliament has authorized the demolition of the Liberators of Riga monument, which has become a true symbol of national memory in the country. To make everything legal, the deputies will be offered to adopt amendments to the legislation on the treaty between Latvia and Russia, according to which the authorities must ensure the care and preservation of memorial structures and mass graves of soldiers in the territory of the country.
Latvian residents defend the right to keep memory of liberators
Now the police are on duty near the monument and does not allow people who came with flowers to lay flowers to the monument. The citizens are outraged. In the morning, on May 10, on the order of authorities, the tractor removed all flowers from the monument. However, on the same day, residents once again began to bring bouquets and candles to the monument. The Russian embassy in Latvia called the incident "the utter gross out".
War on monuments continues in Estonia
Estonia is going to remove all the monuments to the Red Army. The demolition was supported by the country's Prime Minister. She added that the monuments hurt the people of Estonia because they remind them of the suffering of the people. Now, the memory of the fallen will simply be consigned to oblivion.
