Ukraine continues its total derusification

17 ноября 2022
In the meantime, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine continues its policy of Polonization. The city of Novograd-Volynsky in Zhitomir region has been renamed Zvyagel - the name it had until 1795, two years before  it became part of the Russian Empire. The rejection of Russian names is also observed in other cities - for example, in Dnepropetrovsk, Pushkin Avenue will be named after Lesya Ukrainka. In total, more than 100 toponyms have been renamed in the city. Earlier, the Kiev authorities made public the list of 40 renamed streets, avenues and squares, which are connected with Russia and the Soviet past. Now they have started renaming cities, too - apparently, so that their Russian names would not confuse the ears of Polish citizens, who have received a special legal status in Ukraine.
