Monuments to Suvorov and Catherine the Great demolished in Odessa

29 декабря 2022

The monuments to the commander Alexander Suvorov and the city's founder Empress Catherine II were finally removed from Odessa, secretly  and under the cover of night. Local residents allegedly voted online for the dismantling. However, Odessa City Council  made the final decision.

Earlier, the mayor of Odessa Trukhanov said the demolition will cause discontent in the society and contribute to the growth of pro-Russian sentiment. And then the President of Ukraine demanded that the special services checked the mayor for loyalty to Kiev. It is noteworthy that the monument to the Empress has existed since 1900 and is not connected in any way with the Soviet era, but it is considered to be a recognized work of art and one of the symbols of the city.
