Wrangel Island is a Russian territory, which under no circumstances will be given to the United States, said State Duma deputy Fedot Tumusov in a conversation with Gazeta.ru, commenting on the article in the WSJ, which called the island "American." This was reported by RIA Novosti.
"Wrangel Island is a Russian land. And we will not give an inch of our native land. Moreover, according to the latest amendments to our Constitution it is explicitly written that not a single square meter of land shall be given away. This would be a state crime. This is out of the question," said Tumusov.
Earlier, columnist Thomas Dans said in an article for the Wall Street Journal that Wrangel Island allegedly belongs to the United States, and Russia "holds" the territory since 1924. According to the columnist, the island allegedly hosts a military base that threatens the U.S. sovereignty.
