The St. Petersburg City Court, following the suit of the Prosecutor's Office, recognized the actions of the Nazis during the siege of Leningrad as a war crime and genocide of the Soviet people, RIA Novosti reported.

The consideration of this claim on the merits began on October 3. During hearings the St. Petersburg city court interrogated specialists and witnesses and studied a number of classified documents.

During the hearings, the St. Petersburg prosecutor Viktor Melnik stated that the number of victims of the blockade of Leningrad exceeded the statistics: more than 1 million instead of the generally accepted 649 thousand people. The damage caused by the Nazis and their accomplices to Leningrad and its inhabitants is estimated at 35.3 trillion rubles at current exchange rates, the prosecutor's office calculated.

Earlier, the courts recognized the actions of the Nazis during the Great Patriotic War as genocide in eight regions of Russia, including the Leningrad Region.
