Soviet monument being demolished in Latvian city of Liepaja

Latvia, instead of solving economic problems, keeps on fighting history. Another demolition of a Soviet monument is taking place in the city of Liepaja. The local authorities tried to do everything quietly and discreetly, under the cover of night, but it didn't work. The memorial was built in 1960 to commemorate the events of June 1941, when the city was defended from Wehrmacht troops. The citizens themselves call the monument a "grenade launcher", because the sculpture by the master Egons Zvirbulis shows a worker throwing a grenade. 70 other Soviet-era memorials are next in line to face the same fate of destruction by Latvian authorities.
