The night before there was a spontaneous energy crisis in Lithuania: the country's companies were forced to stop production, as well as to de-energize devices and premises. This situation lasted for just over an hour. The retail chain Norfa increased the voluntary blackout for one hour in protest to draw the attention of the authorities to the disastrous state of businesses.
The Lithuanian energy system bought power from the Norwegian exchange at a price of 4 thousand euros per megawatt-hour: accordingly, from 6 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, the consumer had to pay at record rates. The Lithuanians believe that the European Commission should find out the reason for such absurd prices, but so far they have been paying without complaint. Because of the energy crisis, fossil fuel-fired thermal power plants resumed operation in the country. The parliament calls to regulate tariffs.
The Lithuanian Energy Minister warned citizens: high prices will last another two years, and price records like yesterday's will be frequent.
