The Foreign Ministry said that the study of the Ukrainian language will not be banned in the new Russian regions, RIA-Novosti reported.
The study of the Ukrainian language will not be banned in the LNR, DNR, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Yevgeny Ivanov told to the reporters.
"The agreement stipulates that Russian is the state language, but the study of other languages will not be banned," Ivanov said.
He answered in the affirmative to the question whether this also applies to the Ukrainian language.
"It will be determined by local authorities. But in general, it is not banned," Ivanov added.
Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke in the Kremlin on September 30 on the results of the referendums in the DNR, LNR, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions, after which he signed agreements with their heads on the regions' accession to Russia. The Russian Constitutional Court later ruled that these treaties complied with the Russian Constitution.
The State Duma ratified the treaties on the accession of the new regions into Russia on Monday. The Federation Council will consider these laws on Tuesday.
