The FSB for the Omsk Region today published interrogation file, in which Latvian legionnaires recounted their military "exploits." Here, a certain Robert Gulvis describes mass shootings and the use of gas chamber. According to him, a thousand or more people were killed as part of punitive operations. They were forced to dig their own graves and then many were buried alive. Among the victims of Latvian SS legion were mostly women, children and old people.
It's noteworthy that the current head of the Latvian National Security Council is a relative of Janis Cirulis, a famous executioner. This partly explains the leniency of the local authorities toward manifestations of Nazism.
Heroization of Nazism in Latvia
A procession in memory of Latvian SS legionnaires was held in Riga. The Interior Ministry urged against holding it, but at the insistence of the mayor it was approved, while the anti-fascist protest was banned by the authorities. There were about 200 people in the column, mostly ultra-right-wing supporters. According to some reports, there were a few members of parliament among the Nazi worshippers.
In the last two years such actions were banned because of COVID-19 and earlier caused scandals. It is known that Latvians participated in many punitive actions. During "Operation Winter Magic" alone, hundreds of villages were burned and 12,000 civilians were shot.
