The IAEA called on the IAEA to stop shelling the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant and its surroundings as a result of its mission. This was reported by RIA Novosti. The shelling of ZNPP could result in damage to important facilities and unrestricted release of radioactive materials.
"The IAEA recommends stopping shelling on and around the site immediately to avoid further damage to the plant and its associated facilities, to ensure the safety of operating personnel and to maintain physical integrity to ensure safe and reliable operation," the document says.
"This requires the agreement of all relevant parties to establish a nuclear safety and security protection zone around the ZNPP," the report's authors pointed out.
It is noted that while the ongoing firings have not resulted in a nuclear emergency, they continue to pose an ongoing threat to nuclear safety with potential impacts on critical functions that could lead to radiological consequences.
