IAEA publishes report following its mission to Zaporizhzhia NPP

The IAEA has published a report on the results of a mission to the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant. The agency recommends immediately stopping the shelling of Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant and the surrounding area. This is reported by TASS.

In its report, the IAEA also calls to immediately establish a "safety zone" around the Zaporizhzhia NPP. It is ready to immediately begin consultations on the creation of a safety zone around the nuclear power plant. According to the agency, the creation of a "safety zone" around the Zaporizhzhia NPP would prevent "a nuclear incident" that could cause hostilities.

In addition, the IAEA stated about incidents at Zaporizhzhia NPP that violated the principles of nuclear safety. The agency noted that the other three Ukrainian nuclear power plants were operating safely.

Igor Konashenkov, official representative of the ministry: 

“During the day, 15 artillery shellings of the city of Energodar and the territory of the Zaporizhzhia NPP by the Ukrainian Armed Forces was recorded. A total of 20 shells were fired by Ukrainian artillery, including three on the territory of the nuclear power plant. One of the shells hit the roof of the special building number 1, the second hit the area of the crossing between the special building number 1 and the second power unit, the third one exploded near the tanks for storage of distilled water near the power unit number 2. The fire came from Ukrainian positions near the village of Marganets in Dnepropetrovsk region. Russian artillery return fire suppressed the AFU artillery units. The radiation situation in the territory of Zaporizhzhya NPP is normal.”
