Dismantling of Soviet symbols supported by Riga City Council

The Baltic States continue to get rid of their historical past. This time, Soviet symbols are in danger.

The Riga City Council supported the dismantling of elements of fencing on the city embankment with images of sickle and hammer installed on the bank of the river Daugava (also known as the Western Dvina), reports the portal Delfi. The publication notes that the symbols have been installed in 46 places on the embankment. At the same time, members of the city development committee are concerned that the dismantling could "turn into safety problems".

It is also specified that the authorities decided to remove the hammer and sickle from the facades of two buildings and the memorial plaque to the Soviet intelligence officer Martins Poga.
