By Elena Gorelchik: The year 2019 is expected to be remarkable for sport in Belarus. In summer, the Second European Games will be held in Minsk. In September, Minsk’s Dinamo Stadium will host the first ever track and field competition between the teams of Europe and the US. The initiative of holding such a competition came from the head of the European Athletic Association, who admires not only Belarus, but also the work of the Belarusian Athletics Federation.
Svein Arne Hansen, the President of the European Athletic Association: "Why Minsk? The Belarusian capital is a hidden pearl. A year and a half ago, we held a CEO-conference here that gathered the heads of athletics federations of all European countries. The next CEO-conference will also take place in Minsk, and the renewed Dinamo Stadium played a role, and I am confident that in the future this arena will prove itself as a spectacular venue for competitions."
The match will be held at Dinamo Stadium on 9-10 September. Now, reconstruction works are under way here. The two teams will include 72 athletes each, with 4 athletes from each team performing in one discipline. The selection will take place at the European team championships, athletes from all 4 leagues will be able to compete for a place on the national team.
Svein Arne Hansen also pointed out he had no doubt the athletics match between Europe and the US will bring together the full stands at Dinamo Stadium. Already today, one of the leading European television companies is negotiating the broadcast of the competition. The match in Belarus will be seen all over the world.
