President criticizes Belarusian brewing industry

This topic was subject to high-level discussion 7 years ago, when it was decided to hold large-scale technical re-equipment of breweries and rules specifying the entry of world's leading brewers in the Belarusian market were adopted. It was also decided to establish modern plants, build up production capacities, and increase the output of Belarusian brands and import-substituting products.
300 million dollars have been invested in the Belarusian brewing industry, with one-tenth accounting for budget means. Large loans have been provided by Belarusian and foreign banks. As a result, breweries have been equipped with high-tech equipment, which led to an increase in production capacity up to 70 million decalitres of beer per year. However, beer imports make up 30%. According to the President, this is unacceptable for a country having large brewing companies. For example, beer imports make up only 2% in Poland and about 4% in Russia.
Alexander Lukashenko demanded that members of the Government and heads of beer brewing companies should deal with the issue of reviving the industry, attracting additional investments, if necessary. The results are to be reported to the President next year.
