President of Belarus considering three options for rising retirement age

10 марта 2016

Andrei Krivosheev: The President of Belarus will consider three options for raising the retirement age with the possibility of a phased introduction of the decision on January 1, 2017. The need for a later retirement age is dictated by demographic and economic conditions. If nothing changes, the active part of the population will soon be unable to provide even the current level of pensions due to structural changes in society: the number of employees is reduced, the number of pensioners is growing. On the other hand, the experience of developed countries confirms that later retirement contributes to an increase life expectancy.

The pension reform is a serious choice of the whole society, and people in uniform are no exception. The President instructed the security officials and the government examine in details the special conditions of work and service, and to provide a coherent and a complete list of exceptions to the pension.

In total the government and the President consider three scenarios. The main difference is in the speed of reform, gender equality and the results for the economy.
