Belarus is marking Knowledge Day today. 965,000 young Belarusians, including more than 106,000 first-graders, will begin the new academic year in over 3,000 schools across the country. Yesterday saw celebratory assemblies and first bells ringing in Belarus’ educational establishments.

Prior to Knowledge Day the President visited school No. 56 in Kamennaya Gorka, Minsk’s most densely populated district. The school will open its doors to 1,800 schoolchildren, nearly one-third of which being first-graders. Minsk’s school No. 56 is one of the most advanced in the country. In addition to general subjects, it combines sports, arts and music courses.

Alexander Lukashenko stressed that everything possible had been done in Belarus to turn the first school day into a real holiday and signed the school’s guest book.
