By Alexei Adashkin: The sustainable development of any country is impossible without peace and security. This thesis was one of the key ones during the Belarusian President’s speech at the UN Summit plenary session in New York. For three days the representatives of 193 countries have been discussing what changes will occur in the world in the next 15 years. The global summit has adopted a sustainable development programme containing 17 fundamental goals. It provides for the complete elimination of poverty and social inequality, significant improvement of the environmental situation, the promotion of economic growth, healthy lifestyle, access to education and gender equality.

The President of Belarus delivered his address on the final most important day of the summit. According to Alexander Lukashenko, the UN should not be used to demonstrate anyone's power. The politician recalled the armed conflicts of recent years and urged to seek restoring the balance and credibility in the international arena.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon thanked Alexander Lukashenko for the consistent support of the United Nations and the country’s activities in the United Nations. Alexander Lukashenko and Ban Ki-moon discussed the situation in south-east Ukraine, stressing the inadmissibility of civilian casualties in any conflict. The President of Belarus pointed out the need for urgent decisive measures aimed at the cessation of hostilities, particularly in view of a possible spread of the conflict to the whole territory of Europe. The UN Secretary-General thanked Alexander Lukashenko for the constructive role in searching for a solution to the Ukrainian conflict, noting that Minsk has become a symbol of peace. The Belarusian leader also left an entry in the UN signature book.

Alexander Lukashenko met with Raul Castro, Chairman of the State Council and the Council of Ministers of Cuba, one of the most influential politicians in Latin America, and held talks with UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein. The President pointed out that the Belarusian side is cooperating with the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights with great pleasure. Belarus is actively working to promote its initiatives to combat human trafficking and illegal trafficking in human organs and preserve the traditional family institution.

Today will see the launch of a week of high-level meetings in New York with addresses to be delivered by the leaders of Belarus, China, France, Russia and the United States.
