President Alexander Lukashenko has requested important decisions to be made in the scientific sphere so that science would move forward and develop. Speaking at yesterday’s meeting on the problems and prospects of Belarusian science development, the President said it was necessary not to reform, but to perfect what had already been achieved in the scientific sphere.

The meeting at the National Academy of Sciences featured a total of over 400 people. Alexander Lukashenko urged the participants to discuss whether the existing system of the management and functioning of science met present-day realities.

Prior to the event, the President attended an exhibition of scientific and technological achievements — it featured 150 newest exhibits demonstrating research and development results over the past two years. According to the President, it is important that these world-level achievements do not overshadow the current problems existing in science.

The dialogue between the Belarusian leader and the scientists lasted for more than five hours. Alexander Lukashenko drew attention to the inertness and bulkiness of the scientific sphere’s structure. Among the problems outlined by the President is the lack of significant state contracts for procuring scientific-technical and innovative products. Therefore, specific proposals should be worked out to develop the scientific sphere from the staff training system to introducing know-hows into the economy.

This year is the Year of Science, which is crucial for future modernization and development. The President urged not only scientists and officials, but also lawmakers to join the strategy and pointed out that science in Belarus should be fundamental and applicable to meet the country’s needs.

The President's address to the scientific community is to be prepared by September.
