Elections to local Councils of Deputies held in Belarus

19 февраля 2018

By Ilona Krasutskaya. The Belarusians have made their choice. Yesterday the elections to local councils of deputies were held in the country. The final results will be known on Friday, and today the Central Election Commission has released preliminary data. 18,110 deputies were elected. The turnout in local elections exceeded 77%. Residents of the Vitebsk region were the most active voters.

The presence of foreign observers in local elections is not necessary. Nevertheless, the CEC has registered all 46 people who expressed the desire to be observers at the elections: they are mostly employees of embassies working in Belarus. The majority of representatives came from the embassies of Russia, Lithuania and the United States.

The President made his choice as well. Alexander Lukashenko voted on the main day, as it is difficult to find time in the tight schedule for early voting. In an interview with journalists, the President explained his choice of a candidate. He chose the person who benefits the country the most.
