Nomination of candidates for Council of Republic of National Assembly starts in Belarus

The process of the nomination of candidates for the Council of the Republic of Belarus’ National Assembly, which will run until 19 August, will involve the Presidiums of local base-level Councils of Deputies and respective executive committees and the Presidium of the Minsk City Council and Minsk City Executive Committee.

The candidates will be registering at the Central Election Commission from 20 to 24 August. The elections of senators will take place from 25 August to 13 September.

Belarusian citizens aged 30 and older, residing in the territory of the respective region or Minsk for at least five years, can become a member of the Council of the Republic.

The upper chamber of the Belarusian Parliament consists of 64 senators, 56 of which are elected and another 8 appointed by the President.

The new line-up of the Council of the Republic will be announced no later than on 30 September.

Meanwhile, the number of initiative groups collecting signatures in support of the parliamentary candidates has decreased. Initially, the district election commissions registered 446 groups. Three of those have suspended their activities.

The parliamentary elections will be held in Belarus on 11 September.
