14 января 2018

A little more than a month remains ahead of the elections of deputies in local councils. There are nearly 23,000 candidates ready to join the struggle for the deputy mandate this year. However, the exact number of those who will take part in the elections will be announced by the end of the next week.

Through 18 January, election committees throughout the country are checking the documents of the candidates.

According to Chair of the Central Election Commission of Belarus Lidia Yermoshina, Minsk has traditionally high numbers of candidates. However, in some regions of the country the situation is quite the opposite, and there are districts where a candidate will most likely run unopposed. On average, the competition in the country is 2.4 people per mandate.
